Gillian Evans writes about teaching and a tribunal in Scotland which failed her son in every way

RRF committee member, Gillian Evans, has written about the travesty of the failure of teachers in Scotland to teach her dyslexic son to read because they did not use the research-informed approach which includes high quality, systematic synthetic phonics. Instead, Thomas was taught with whole words, multi-cueing word-guessing strategies, and some phonics.

The result was devastating for Thomas not only in regard to his struggles with reading and spelling, but also with his self-esteem and morale. Thomas became desperately unhappy.

Read Gillian's post here:

As one of the three key witnesses for the tribunal, recommended by Sir Jim Rose, I wrote a follow-on blog to contribute further information here:

You will see how I make the point (strongly) that it is not acceptable that teacher-training in research-informed reading instruction remains at the level of 'chance'. This is simply not good enough at all. Out of the United Kingdom, it is only England where official guidance is statutory and informed by international research and leading-edge practice.

Not only was Thomas failed badly by his teachers, the teachers themselves were failed badly by their lack of professional knowledge and understanding, and we know that many thousands of children are failed by weak and flawed teaching.

This need not be the case. We know what to provide - the point is that not everyone knows.
