Re: PIRLS 2023 - Good news for England!

You are right Jenny. Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland delayed their testing and then tested children a year older than those in the countries that were included in the results. England delayed testing too, but then tested children the same age as the other countries that were included. I...

PIRLS 2023 - Good news for England!

England came fourth out of the 43 countries that tested children of the same age in the Progress International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS) - its best results ever, compared with other countries. Could it be due to teaching systematic synthetic phonics gradually more effectively over years now? An...

Re: Speech-to-print (aka sound-to-print)

I don't feel strongly about this, although I do agree with Jenny's and Debbie's comments. I certainly don't believe there's anything superior about teaching consonant-e as a word-final spelling, as <ke> in ‘take’. I've heard five year olds explain "split vowel digraphs" happily and confide...

"Fix It Reading"

Has any one used this intervention for KS3? My sense, by looking at what's quoted below, is that it's too detailed and will take students away from the texts the rest of their class is studying. Also, it doesn't appear to tackle the fact that students may have poor comprehension because they can't d...

Wikipedia and Synthetic Phonics

I looked up synthetic phonics on Wikipedia some years ago and found the details were wrong. It's been on my "To Do" list ever since to write something more accurate. But I looked it up again today and it's changed. Now it's excellent and includes loads of information. It's here: https://en...

Standardised Tests

The RRF proposes that standardised tests are used regularly to identify children whose reading is poor for their age. Soon there will be a blog about this on the RRF website, so look out for it! Meanwhile, yesterday I was pleased to be sent an advert which began like this: Standardised reading asses...

Re: MPs and peers do worse than 10-year-olds in Y6 SAT's.

The Guardian made a different conclusion from me. When I began reading the article, I thought they were showing how well educated our Year 6 children are now, compared with the peers who took the tests. That's not to say that there aren't problems with the test. It's right that schools are accountab...

Reading Books for Different Children

Teachers and others in education should not be too ready to judge the quality of books for teaching children to read, before trying them out with a range of different children. There is a wide range of books available now for children to practise reading using the phonics they have learnt. I am real...

Below are links to a TV news report from Trinidad and Tobago. It is about a project to improve literacy teaching in government schools. I was privileged to be part of the programme, by providing Jolly Phonics training to teachers there. Combating Illiteracy Part 1 | 7pmnews | tv6tnt.com - ccn TV6 ht...
