Re: Primary school websites reading scheme details
So it's Ok for you not to speak up, but it's morally indefensible for teachers not to?

Re: what's wrong with teacher training
How many doctors, dentists, driving instructors, shelf stackers at Tescos etc etc etc have common sense? How many RRFers do? Common sense can not be taught as part of teacher training. Neither can sensitivity. They can be deemed to be important qualities that we would like people who go into any pro...

Me too Geraldine, I'd love to see the breakdown of the post war literacy figures that show you were wrong in your generalised assertion.
Can we have them please, elsiep?

Re: Introducing Perspectives-The OTR Blog
Hi Rod, Not spam at all so please have no worries on that score; quite the opposite, as I'm sure regular RRFers will go and visit. Please also don't think that because some ideas don't get feedback on here that people aren't interested. They are, but they're just busy or heavily involved in doing ot...

Re: Phonics screening check technical report
Lesley, perhaps you could direct a sharp word or two towards those teachers to discourage the test-cheaters from doing the same thing with the next test. No thanks. It's a non-issue as far as I' m concerned. As for the leaking of a couple of non-words by persons unknown on mumsnet, so what? Most no...

Re: Phonics screening check technical report
It's a mixed picture Jenny. A certain % age were just a bit behind, some were in need of 1:1 which they are now getting, a few were very newly arrived. The one "above child" who failed we are certain just had a bad day as they are progressing well in their group and didn't need to change group or re...

Re: Phonics screening check technical report
Thanks for the info Jenny. Our results were directly in line with how far along the programme (RWI) the children were. We worked out that if all of the key group passed we would come out in the 80%s and if none of them did, then the 70%s. As it was, half of them passed so we came out at 75%ish. Ther...

Re: Phonics screening check technical report
I look forward to getting the next installment. Maybe that will have plain English stating that the test administrators cheated on behalf of the children just below the pass mark. Does the following mean that? Oh Ken, you're such a tease! I've had to wait 3 whole days of this lovely new year before...

Re: our schools need more teaching and less management
I'm really glad to see such a prime example of a delightfully drifting agenda-dyslexic RRF ramble all round the houses as demonstrated on this thread! But I do want to get back to the original blog excerpt posted by Jim. The question to ask is this... WHY do schools have management teams like this t...

Re: Is Poverty Destiny?
I would support Jenny's comments re the split digraphs being harder. The children need a lot of experience with these.
Again, something picked up on by many schools following the Y1 screening check.

Re: PIRLS Australia 22nd in Reading
Australian kids can't read. What! None of them?! Glad to hear that there are signs of the green shoots of recovery (not THAT recovery!) JAC. Sometimes government initiatives do have a positive impact and begin to move things in the right direction. Hopefully, the PIRLS results will give more streng...

Re: Is Poverty Destiny?
ANY programme or guidance can be undermined Mona, even yours, if people don't understand the importance of following it faithfully. SOME schools might still be teaching high frequency words and sending home book banded reading material. This is because they don't yet understand that for some childre...
