Re: Other difficulties

Thanks Maizie, that's very helpful and is I think what the parents will do. The child is on school action plus with IEP and school are supposed to be providing additional support for literacy but the assistant is off sick and no stand in provided since Christmas. The parents came to me partly becaus...

Other difficulties

Hi. I've done a search on this site for SEN to check if this has been raised before but don't think it has directly. I'm a Sounds-Write trained parent-turned-tutor and helping local children overcome reading difficulties. It's still early days (only trained Spring 2014) and I have a lot of questions...

Re: Handwriting books

Brilliant. Thank you all. Interesting about the tramlines Debbie. After speaking to a secondary school SENCO it sounds really hard to improve handwriting a) past a certain age and b) with children who have fine motor/co-ordination problems. But I'll keep an open mind - children are endlessly surpris...

Handwriting books

Hi

Can anyone recommend:

1. a good cursive writing instruction book, preferably with practise pages?
2. a handwriting exercise book (with the right lines for tall and dipping letters, and preferably a shaded middle area)?

As you can tell, I have a lot to learn on the terminology!

Thanks

RRF Conference 2015

I've just found out (via a comment on Twitter) that there will be a Reading Reform Foundation conference this year on Saturday 28th March.

Is this correct? Where can I find more information about it?

Thanks

Re: Remote phonics coaching

Thanks Debbie - yes, materials should be easy enough to sort out. I'm a bit stuck on how id set it up with just an ipad - I guess I could set up a magnetic board and aim camera at that and 'narrate' in the background. I think I may have read about it on Melinda Creen's Top Notch Teaching site in Aus...

Remote phonics coaching

Hi. I seem to remember reading somewhere (possibly on a RRF post) that someone was doing remote or virtual coaching of synthetic phonics over Skype. I'd be interested to hear how this can be set up practically (with a tablet? what resources? How do you organise the workspace?) I'm currently coaching...

Re: Horatio Speaks blog: On Reading

I saw it too and I'm afraid I couldn't restrain myself from adding a comment to the blog - it was such a good one and I felt it really got to the heart of the problem of illiteracy. My response was anecdotal of course so not 'valid' in scientific terms but he was kind enough to respond; never quite ...

Re: Papermover v RR teacher

Aghhh...fated not to reply to you easily Papermover - this time it was a powercut! Where was I?.. I think we can hold them to account via the Local Authority but its a battle we decided not to have, for the time being at least. I've seen this senior team be quite petty and vindictive and unfortunate...

Re: Papermover v RR teacher

Hi Papermover - just seen this thread, typed you a late reply and promptly lost it all as it timed out when I put the boys to bed - sigh. I'm really sorry to hear that you're continuing to have a cruddy time with your daughters school. We also had one of 'those' meetings with an extremely defensive ...

Re: Parents-turned-tutors

Listing schools does sound tricky Debbie. Given that by the time parents get to the RRF it's likely that their child is having problems at school (whether that's an SP school/teacher not doing it so well or simply a child that's 'fallen through the cracks') perhaps a list of remedial tutors would be...

Re: Parents-turned-tutors

Hi Papermover - Hope you and your daughter are enjoying your phonics? I'll text you but in the meantime watch this space in case a list appears by magic! If it's an admin resource issue then I might dare to poke my head above the parapet and offer my time, if that is at all helpful for the RRF? (She...
