Re: Autumn Children
It is very difficult here to delay entry and IF you are successful your child may be forced back into the 'correct' year for secondary school especially as you education legislation specifies age of compulsory education not years or length of or attainment. Several European countries that I am a lit...

Re: Autumn Children
Didn't the old 11+ weight marks or age? pretty sure it did. Most 11 + test DO standardize which isn't quite the same. Usually it works something like this: all children born in September are compared to all other children born in September etc through the months. Because there is a real Summer born...

Is this your Local Authority?
Bedfordshire (Central), Bracknell Forest, Cambridgeshire, Hampshire, Hertfordshire, Oxfordshire, Surrey, West Berkshire, Windsor & Maidenhead Wokingham. Are any of you familiar with any of the above local authorities and could comment on their implementation of the Rose review reading. In other word...

Re: Sitting in rows is best
Personally, I think it IS self-evident that an on-task learning environment with fewer distractions gives each child (but especially those on an ADD/ADHD spectrum) a much greater opportunity to learn. And I speak as someone with ADD who knows she could not have functioned in many of the modern class...

Re: Reading Recovery, EAL and teacher training
He Geraldine :-) I have been back in the UK a few years now and treated myself a while back to attending one of Fiona Nevola's courses, I really will have to make it to a conference one of these years! In fact I think Fiona is the only RRF stalwart I have ever met though I have spoken on the phone t...

Re: Reading Recovery, EAL and teacher training
And I now remember something else I was after. Again I seem to remember that the KS2 SATs test (or similar) used to reward pupils for guessing. So if presented with a picture of a horse by a pond and text "the horse is next to the pond" they would have been deemed correct if they 'read' pony for hor...

Reading Recovery, EAL and teacher training
Hi all I hope you can help me as I need some quick help here and the search facility on here isn’t being terribly helpful: Reading Recovery: an explanation of RR and why apparently good results may be very misleading (eg that children are trained to read the texts they are tested on, children being ...

Re: Sitting in rows is best
I have been concerned about classroom organisation for as long as I have worried about the teaching of reading. And despaired similarly, as with reading, for the blatant disregard of the evidence versus popular teaching ideology. One paper I came across many years ago gives a good concise account of...

Autistic pupil
I have a 14 year old pupil starting with a Statement for being on the autistic spectrum. He has a reading age of just 6. His basic code knowledge is good but he cant manage multi syllable words and can't segment (yet). He can't manipulate or process sounds either. I didn't test his spelling age as I...

did Ruth's previous 'Superphonics' scheme introduce the graphemes in the same order? The books were written by Gill Munton and published by Hodder

Re: ire as in fire
yes, I imagine accent will affect how you teach it and American English has a much stronger /r/ sound in vowel+r graphemes.
