Re: International Literacy Centre and RR - important!

There has been a debate on Linkedin on Reading Recovery Data. Jean Harrison (http://www.vaslearningcentre.com)posted the following comment and has given permission to it to be circulated: I was struck by the quote from J F Kennedy in the closing paragraph of the document on New Zealand literacy leve...

Re: So how is reading taught in 2014?

I'm not sure that teacher's have to think deeply about any children who are not making good progress . There are very fine programmes, particularly suitable for children not making good progress - Sound Reading System, Sound Discovery amongst them - and decodable books like those I'm involved with t...

Yes, it was certainly great to read - thanks, Heather.

And Susan flagged up a fascinating map of 'Errors in word reading at the end of first grade, by country (Europe)':

Have just read this, Tricia. Extraordinary how closely your family's experiences mirror those of Susan Rvachew. Also Palisadesk used to provide insights into the difference between attitudes here and in N.America. http://developmentalphonologicaldisorders.wordpress.com/2014/02/18/language-input-pove...

Re: What's happening in universities re. SP training?

She thinks that the fact that ‘th’ can be pronounced as voiced or unvoiced is a big problem. It isn’t – children find it very easy to do this particular ‘tweak’. She also mentions the voicing/non-voicing issue in connection with the ‘s’ in ‘as’, ‘is’, ‘was’/’bus’, ‘pus’, ‘yes’. Again, this is a min...

ll year old at Level 1 - help?

At a special school - drowning in pressure and work i imagine - teachers don't know what to do with 11 year old very disaffected boy who is still at Level 1. They are at a loss to know what to do. It doesn't seem that they'll go down the road of training staff. Any ideas?

Re: Cam. Uni to open PS to act as research centre

This is perhaps the closest anyone has ever got to a specific pragmatic challenge to the reactionary powers of ITTs - thank you John for that very clear message. I wonder if you would mind if others (if so minded) would likewise challenge - via Charlie Taylor? The pressure for change needs to be rel...

Re: Whole Language analysed by Prof. Hempenstall

A slightly diversionary point. Adult daughter who is an avid reader and excellent proof reader had great difficulty recently in unglueing sounds when learning about phonemes for decodable readers she was writing. Even after 3 years, she still can't quite grasp that, for instance, 'st' consists of tw...

Thanks for flagging this up, Maizie. It is long but Hempenstall is always worth reading and this is a timely reminder of WL - its tentacles still clinging on...

Re: Trials of a Secondary School Reading Intervention

This is a pitiful result

Should be in red lights - and Debbie's experience is replicated everywhere. Look at Oxford - throwing millions at illogical 'catch-up' programmes and there are still 8-9 year olds who can only read c-v-c words...

Re: Outstanding overview addresses nonsense in Davis's paper

Thanks Maizie - I'd by-passed this tho I usually read Daisy Christodoulou's blogs. It may be that working with one specific SP approach for the past 7 yrs I see things through their prism but : • Prior knowledge as a prerequisite to effective learning. • Meaningfulness. • The right mix of generaliza...

Re: Outstanding overview addresses nonsense in Davis's paper

Thanks Maizie - I just came on here to flag up Morag Stuart - good news! I am uneasy that there could be a tendency to 'overdose' on phonics. Both 'overdosing' and ignorance are damaging so it's hard to find the balance. In the 80s, I've known a number of children who had phonics-free education. Thi...

Interesting stuff - thanks,all.

John who is the 'Ruth' who comments on your blog? Mind you, she must be intelligent as she can decipher the squiggles which allow comment! The couple of times I've tried to leave a comment have ended in failure - tho the 'code' seems clearer this time.
