Re: Ofsted: teaching reading in Stoke-failing children

'and, in most of the schools visited, pupils in Key Stage 2 did not read enough books....' throw-away line but crucially important. Maybe Tristram Hunt will take a close look at what is happening on his home patch?

Re: EEF report on interventions for older readers

Yes Kestrel I have been very perplexed by the lack of detail, and detailed analysis, in the EEF report.

What is also concerning is the interpretation of Effect Sizes - neatly explained by:

Re: Minding the Knowledge Gap

She's great, isn't she, Jim. A number of us heard her talk at last September's ResearchEd. There are a few excellent bloggers who talk lucidly and in painstaking detail about the need for knowledge including: websofsubstance.wordpress.com/author/webby101 - Harry Webb whose blog today is one of many ...

Re: Prisoners of the Blob

I don't have time/energy to respond in detail. It also seems pointless to spend time picking apart the elements of your part essay/part tirade. It's also fruitless to point to Daisy Christodoulou's Seven Myths of Education; the work of Zig Englemann, E.D. Hirsh; the huge success of those schools whi...

Re: Children aged four will be tested at school

What's the difference between the endless tick boxes, observations, post-it notes etc.etc. and the assessments? I haven't really kept up and it would be good to have some clarity on this.

Re: ‘ADHD Does Not Exist

IDS may not be the brightest cookie on the political stage and some clunking decisions have been made but there are thoughtful elements too. On a slightly different track it was interesting to read how much Tony Benn admired some of those on the far right. It's too easy to label people, perhaps?

I'm not a great Toby Young fan - but I'd love to know more about your objections, Elsie, to the factual basis of his pamplet.

Re: NUT's anti-phonics check video.

Thanks, Jenny. A fascinating quote. The depressing thing is that there are no signs now that child-centred, knowledge-light, teachers, lecturers:
are also fighting to rid society of the “savage inequalities” that Kozol (1991) so eloquently wrote about.

I don't know anything about LCP, Sarah, but I'd love to know how well your school does with the Phonics Check and at Sats 2 - also whether you have a high number of FSM children...
Good luck with your efforts - what tough nuts to crack!

Re: 14 academy chains barred from running more schools

At least Ofsted are going to inspect Academy chains now, it seems. I think the news about the poor Academies leaked out a few days ago - though it's always useful to see what does appear on budget day ...

Re: Ofsted

I agree, Derrie. TA's do need 'standards' and I would have thought that it was not beyond the wit of DfE to ensure that this could be done. One of Tony Blair's advisers became a TA in Islington and is now, I see, opening a Free School. People like that, with inside knowledge, should analyse the effe...

Re: Ofsted

How can primary schools be 'good' and 'outstanding' when there are children leaving them who are barely literate? It is deeply shocking - not a single one of the teachers decrying SP has been able to list schools with high FSM numbers who enable virtually all children to reach SATs4 on leaving prim...

Some seriously good blogs on the Ofsted turnaround - thanks in the main to forensic critiques of Ofsted inspections. Re: Reading tests in schools

Oh goodness. I don't know much about what they use in schools these days. But reading tests have been a problem as even the NFER ones have a Whole Language bias. The Neale Analysis test which was the standard for many years has comprehension mixed in - disadvantages those who don't have wide vocabul...
