'Putting Welsh Children at a Disadvantage' blog post by RRF committee member Rob Randel

Teacher and literacy specialist, Rob Randel, raises his concerns about official guidance on reading instruction in Wales. Rob compares it to official guidance in England - which notably has similarities but also some distinct differences. He asks the question as to why officials in Wales consider th...

A Tribute to Nick Gibb MP for his many achievements in England and influence in Australia

Without the influence and work of Nick Gibb - on the back benches and when given various ministerial roles - where would we be in England with regard to research-informed reading instruction one has to wonder. Here is a thread I've posted at the International Foundation for Effective Reading Instruc...

Minister for School Standards, Nick Gibb, is again raising the profile of the importance of early reading instruction and the notion of 'DfE validated SSP programmes' with a new window of opportunity for publishers of systematic synthetic phonics programmes to submit an application to be 'DfE valida...

The Government in England has now provided information about ' Choosing a phonics teaching programme ' and listed the Systematic Synthetic Phonics (SSP) programmes that are currently 'validated' by the Department for Education. The list includes SSP programmes that have been DfE validated in the pas...

July 2021: The DfE and Minister Nick Gibb publish a new reading framework - HUGE NEWS!

The publication of a new reading framework by the Department for Education and Minister of State for School Standards, Minister Nick Gibb, on 10th July 2021 is, in my view, a very important development. Policy paper The reading framework: teaching the foundations of literacy Guidance for schools to ...

Re: Mini-whiteboards

Hi Elizabeth, I suggest there are times and appropriate opportunities for the use of mini whiteboards but my opinion is that they are generally overused in our schools - from early years to secondary. Where phonics is concerned, some teachers use them as a board for manipulating magnetic letters or ...

'GOVE'S GREATEST CONTRIBUTION' by Timothy Mills + commentary

This paper by Timothy Mills has been flagged up via Twitter and I think it is a good analysis of some of the main developments in England of 'reading instruction' over the past two decades or so. I've started a thread featuring the paper with some commentary by me via the forum at the International ...

Re: 30th March, 2021: The DfE announces U-turn of its decision to revise Letters and Sounds (DfES, 2007)

Over a number of years I have written about 'Letters and Sounds' (DfES, 2007) being more akin to a framework than a 'full' SSP programme as it necessitated teachers equipping it with teaching and learning resources. It was also suggested in the publication that teachers needed a mnemonic system ('ai...

This is potentially huge news in England's context with implications for schools overseas too.

A blast from the past - but still relevant - about phonics denialism!

This well-known series of posts featuring 'phonics' was written by a UK-based teacher/blogger via his 'Scenes of the Battleground' blog - and as a favourite, it is being currently circulated on Twitter: 3 ways phonics denialists will try to fool you https://teachingbattleground.wordpress.com/2017/11...

Re: The Reading Ape blog

Ofsted's Annual Report for 2019/20 mentions the need for beginners to be provided with books that match the alphabetic code children have been taught - this just shows we've come a long, long way in England since the multi-cueing word-guessing days of the 'Searchlights' reading strategies of the Nat...

Ofsted Annual Report 2019/20

In England, Ofsted reports on its findings pre and post lockdown - consequences of the pandemic. In this thread (link below) that I started via the forum of the International Foundation for Effective Reading Instruction , I featured the observations about 'phonics' at first and then felt very guilty...

We are sorry to hear of the loss of Peter Warner who pioneered for phonics in Japan

Peter Warner was at one time a regular contributor to the RRF message forum. We're really sorry to hear of his loss. Susan Godsland alerted us to a heartwarming testimonial written about Peter Warner and his work and Peter's supportive effect on others: Remembering Peter Warner https://ltprofessiona...
