Re: Students confusing a/e/i and o/u
Confusing the short vowel sounds /e/ /i/ and /o//u/ is also common among pupils in N. Ireland. I find the idea in Jolly Grammar really helpful. It works and the children find it entertaining. Put a puppet/object in a box. I use Inky Mouse. For /a/ put the puppet at the side of the box and say at the...

Re: Looking for advice re adult learner
Eileen I see from previous posts that you use Jolly Phonics. I have adapted this programme and successfully taught three adults to read and spell. If you would like to contact me directly I can email more information.

Re: Early Years Foundation Stage
I couldn’t agree more Geraldine, the story, action and song all help the children remember the sounds. More than nine years ago when I first discovered Jolly Phonics all I had was Sue Lloyd’s Phonics Handbook. I remember sitting on the carpet surrounded by 27 four & five year olds and teaching the s...

Re: Discipline
I also agree with previous posts. The Scottish teacher who taught my niece in primary 1 said that Jolly Phonics was liberating for both the pupil and the teacher. For me it was the most important discovery of my teaching career. Having spent 17 years teaching P1 now Year 1 in N. Ireland I know that ...

Re: Writing 'students' to avoid excluding adult learners...
Having spent most of my teaching career teaching under sixes, one of the most rewarding things I have done in the past two years was to improve the reading and spelling skills of two adults. The impetus to become a fluent reader came when the lady's three year old granddaughter told her that she did...

Simply the Best Way to Teach Reading and Spelling
Simply the Best Way to Teach Reading and Spelling My name is Anne Mc Keefry and for 35 years I was a teacher, during the last 17 years I taught Primary One and Two classes.
